It is 2008, and Tayib, recently retired, is looking back at the lives he has lived and the choices that he, his wife, and his daughter have made. His daughter too is questioning, though in a different time and place. This is a story about how the small turns we take in our lives shape our families and determine what sacrifices we are willing to make and to what end. It is about what it means to be a stranger in a place, and, consequently, how we each make our homes.

This book is exceptional on so many levels. First, I will say it is very cleverly put together - in a way that keeps the reader actively engaged and thoughtful throughout the whole book. The author touches on the complexity of life, embedded in even the most simple events and explores topics such as identify, relationships, dreams and destiny.. The result is a book that causes the reader to reflect on their own life, their own decisions and their own internal conflicts without "trying too hard". The characters are so well developed and so alive in the story, the reader doesn't even realize they are reflecting on their own life. In addition to being so thoughtful and thought provoking, the novel is incredibly enjoyable to read, likely due to the character development and changing story lines. Since having young children, I have not been able to finish a story from beginning to end - likely because I am not able to still my mind, even in fiction. However, I was able to finish this novel in a night because I was truly entrapped with the characters and wanted to see where their journey would lead them. In doing so, I learned a bit about myself. I hope to see more work from this new author.Product details

Yet Home Irene Noor 9781365522413 Books Reviews
I enjoyed reading this book, it was hard to put it down. The book tells the story of the lives of people in 3 generations that I connected with because it is during my lifetime .. modern story with a touch of history.
The way the stories are designed is unique and it keeps you hooked. It takes you to one place and people to connect with them and then the next chapter will take you back to the another story which makes the book even more exciting to read.
I liked the diverse places this book took the reader to, including the lingo from different cultures.
The writing is excellent, yet very simple to understand and places you right there in the situation, The book is well edited. This is the type of book that i would read again with a different goal, probably to enjoy the details of the interactions and the places and not focus so much on how the events will turn.
I recommend this book for everyone, it is a story of this person next door, your coworker or the friend or relative that you think
you know well, but do you ? do you know how he came to where he is now? how his thoughts and decisions are affected by past
decisions he made? and above all .. How different choices can lead to different lives.
Once I picked up Yet, Home, I couldn’t put it down. In an adult “choose your own adventure” story, Noor takes us through the two different paths Tayib could have taken if had decided to emigrate to Australia or stay in Egypt. We are introduced to Dalia, the daughter he would have had if he emigrated, and Layla, the daughter he would have had if he stayed. The book follows their lives from Tayib’s childhood through the seemingly inconsequential but crucial incidents that lead him to take different paths. Noor expertly weaves the story together with authentic characters that any reader will be able to identify with. As a first generation immigrant, I easily identified with Dalia’s experiences, and as a mother of young children, I lived the exact struggles Layla goes through in trying to find her own path. Noor paints vivid pictures with her words of all the settings her characters live in – London, Cairo, Lisbon, Australia – I could see, hear, and even smell the sights, sounds and scents through her descriptions. In addition to the engaging story, Noor intersperses lucid commentary on family and community life in a changing world. These words from Tayib struck me in their accuracy "I have been abroad enough times to know that families in Western countries suffer from their own poverties there never seemed to be enough time for a leisurely meal or an unscheduled conversation with an old friend, at least not in my experience … I fear my own beloved country has made a fatal decision, leaping to achieve material abundance at the expense of its abundance of spirit." My own visits to Egypt confirm those words, as life has become busier for so many people. Traces of that “abundance of spirit” remain, testified by the tears my children shed whenever we leave. Yet, Home is a perfect book club book. When I finished it, all I wanted to do was discuss it with someone. The fictional story provokes discussion not just on the immigrant experience but also on the universal themes of decision-making, family, community life, parenthood, and love. This book was interesting and thought provoking because it's story line is something that I think all of us consider from time to time What would my life be like if I had chosen another path?
This book is exceptionally written, captivating and thought-provoking all at once. The descriptions of the different places are so vivid I had smell/feel/hear what is going on. The characters and quite complex and interesting. Definitely a book that helps you reflect on your choices in life, your goals and of course, on your hopes and dreams for the future. It's a great book!
This is a clever, heartfelt book about our choices and the roads travelled and untraveled in life. It’s bout enduring love and friendship across time and continents. Truly enjoyable!
Amazing book. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. I could taste and smell Egypt and felt the character's emotional pain throughout the book. Fantastic read.
This is a beautifully written, captivating story. As someone who loves to travel, I was in awe of the author's ability to transport me from Cairo to Lisbon to London, and back again. I was also engrossed in each character's narrative, eagerly awaiting the plot twists that unfolded on each page. Most importantly, this novel made me curious about the hidden lives, thoughts, and desires of my own parents and grandparents. I cannot wait to spend a few days exploring my family's past and present over a cup of tea. Thank you, Irene Noor, for bringing these characters to life!
